What’s Next For Gaming In 2026?

🎮 The gaming industry is a little quiet at the moment. Since the release of Nintendo’s Switch 2 last year, not much has been going on. Nobody knows for certain if Rockstar will stick to GTA 6’s release date, while Sony has allegedly pushed back the release of the PS6 until 2028 or 2029 at the earliest. Recent reports also suggest that Gen Z gamers have decided to cut back on their video game purchases, leaving the industry in a confusing spot.

Let’s not forget about AI and rising development costs either. The rise of ‘AI slop’, particularly on Steam, is harming an industry that once had notoriously high standards. And all of it begs the question: what’s next for gaming in 2026?

Emerging trends and data give us at least some insight into what we can expect over the coming year. There’s plenty of good mixed with some bad, so let’s unpack everything right here. From console to PC, here’s what to expect.

Gaming In 2026: What To Expect

The Rise Of Social Casinos With Gen Z
One of the most unexpected recent gaming trends has been the huge increase in Gen Z and Millennials joining ‘social’ casinos, such as those seen on Sweeps Kings. These are online gaming platforms that feature casino-style games with the chance to win real prizes.

They’ve become hugely popular on Kick and Twitch, thanks in part to the likes of Adin Ross and xQc, leading to a huge influx of players signing up. If you had said 10 years ago that a significant chunk of gamers would start ditching traditional AAA games in favor of online casinos, you’d have been called crazy, yet that’s exactly what’s happening.

And with the chance to win gift cards and transfers by betting on virtual ‘Sweeps Coins’, it’s easy to see why new-generation players are obsessed with these types of casinos.

Unavoidable AI Slop
You’ll no doubt be familiar with the term AI slop by now, which is affecting YouTube, social media, and gaming. It’s terrible for the industry, yet nothing seems to be done about it, with a huge influx of AI “vibe coding” games recently hitting Steam and other platforms.

On The Surface, They Might Seem Harmless
However, these types of games are lowering industry standards while also making it harder for the average gamer to find good picks when browsing different stores (surprisingly, 10% of Steam games have never even been reviewed, and half of all Steam games get less than 10 reviews, following this trend).

It is worth mentioning that Steam has rolled out new rules that say all AI- developed games must be labelled as such, something that Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney disagrees with, but it doesn’t address the overriding issue that so many of 2026’s games will be lazy AI games that haven’t been properly tested. The industry has to address this issue before it becomes a full-blown problem.

Explosive Mobile Market Growth
Mobile gaming is one part of the wider industry that hasn’t suffered even the slightest post-COVID, with Newzoo’s Global Games Market analysis predicting $107 billion in revenue for 2026. Year-on-year growth has been the case with mobile gaming for well over a decade now, and more is set to come throughout 2026.

Roblox, Block Blast!, and even much-loved classics like Candy Crush Saga are crushing it with player numbers as an increasing number of gamers ditch expensive console hardware for free-to-play games they can simply access on mobile.

Of course, mobile gaming sceptics are still around, with some accusing the market of abusing ads and putting out low-quality games over the years, but the numbers ultimately tell another story.

The Switch 2 Kicks Into Gear
It’s almost the 1-year anniversary of the Switch 2, and so far, it’s split the Nintendo fanbase.
A huge price increase, lack of big-hitter games, poor battery life, and not many upgrades to brag about, the Switch 2 has arguably underdelivered, despite being Nintendo’s fastest ever-selling console at launch.

However, a new 3D Mario game looks to be on the horizon, as well as a fresh installment for the Zelda franchise, meaning Nintendo fanatics will (most likely) have a great year to look forward to.

Nintendo is more than aware it needs to get users back on side, especially with the retail cost of the Switch 2 due to increase soon, so they’ll most definitely be cooking up some big releases behind the scenes.

It will, at least for the foreseeable future, give the Switch 2 a serious shot in the arm while getting more gamers away from their mobiles and back onto handhelds, even though it’ll mean forking out a premium to get their hands on the Switch 2 and its premium-priced games.

Continued Decline Of Xbox
The Decline Of Xbox Has Been Sad To Witness
Microsoft had the world in the palm of its hand during the classic days of the Xbox 360, but it’s all been relatively downhill since then.

And with the Xbox Series X/S reportedly hitting record low sales recently, 2026 looks set to be the year where Xbox declines into total irrelevance.

Sony will no doubt be happy about this, though, and the PS5 will gain almost flat-out control of the console market moving forward. Only a miracle can save Xbox now, and it doesn’t look like one is coming.

AAA Shrinks While Indie Grows
Ever since 2020, AAA fatigue has become extremely real in gaming. Quite simply, gamers have grown tired of paying upwards of $70 for incomplete, overly priced AAA games that rarely deliver on the hype (Cyberpunk 2077 and Battlefield 2042, we’re looking at you).

And with the global economy continuing to struggle, all signs point to the revival of indie games as more people continue to ditch classic AAA releases.

In today’s world, the appetite for big production AAA games just isn’t as strong as it used to be, but the highly anticipated release of GTA 6 will certainly get people interested again.

If GTA 6 were to flop, though, that could mark the end for AAA games in the traditional sense, opening up the gateway for a complete takeover by F2P games and lower-priced indie titles.

RAM Prices Skyrocket Continue
The bad news for PC gamers in 2026 is that RAM prices are set to continue rising. Will RAM prices ever go down again? Almost certainly not, which means gamers will be picking up the tab with increased hardware costs.

PC users, especially newbies looking to build their own gaming PCs for the first time, will be hit the hardest, and it could lead to a drop-off in the number of overall PC gamers worldwide.

This is definitely one to keep tabs on, as rising ''RAM'' costs are the last thing that PC fans want to experience in 2026.

Hard-Worked Projects Will Stand Out
A positive note to end on is that hard-worked projects, particularly ones that come from indie developers, are going to stand out more than ever in 2026. In the era of AI-slop and bug-filled AAA releases, titles that have had extreme effort poured into them will shine, with GTA 6 hopefully setting the precedent for a new level of standard.

Even though it’s becoming harder than ever to avoid AI games not designed for long-term play, gamers can at least be happy that high-quality games are still being produced.

In 2026 alone, GTA 6, Crimson Desert, 007 First Light, and plenty of others are all expected to drop, so mark your calendars.

Summary: Game On
The gaming industry is in a place it’s never been before. Even developers are unsure what the best move is, whether it’s going for free-to-play battle royales or going all-in on quality over quantity.

And with so much uncertainty, it means 2026 and beyond will be a mixed bag of everything. The big things to watch out for this year are increased engagement with social gaming platforms, a huge increase in low-tier AI games, increased adoption of the Switch 2 as it finally kicks into gear, and an unfortunate increase in RAM prices that could harm the PC market. It’s going to be an interesting year for the gaming industry, that’s for sure.
