The King of Fighters 2002: Challenge to Ultimate Battle Gameplay:
Light Punch (A), Light Kick (B), Strong Punch (C), and Strong Kick (D) are the four buttons you'll use to combat in The King of Fighters 2000. The core gameplay is mostly unchanged from the original, while there are some new features and refined mechanics (such as revised novelists for all characters) to enjoy.

Both the arcade and home versions of the game have two team-based gameplay options:

1. In Team Mode, each player selects three characters to form a team of five. Each player decides in advance in which order their fighters will go into battle. Battles are fought over several rounds, with the victor of each match regaining some health. The other team wins when one side's combatants are knocked out.

2. In the Single-player Mode, players choose one fighter each and compete in the standard one-round, best-of-three, and best-of-five bouts.

The "Tactical Order System" and the "Striker" have been completely dismantled. The energy meters are updated accordingly. In addition to the many attack cancellations and unique MAX Super unique Moves and MAX2 Super Special Moves formerly available in MAX Mode, the mode has returned.

At the very bottom of the screen, next to the health bar, is the player's own Power Gauge. Special attacks are the primary means of filling the gauge; however, dealing and taking damage also contribute.

When a player's gauge is complete, it is saved, and if that person has fewer gauges protected than their maximum, a new meter is given to them. Each player begins with three meters and gains one more for each vanquished opponent (or lost round). When players lose a band, their progress on the indicator is preserved even though they did not win the game.

A Super Special Move, Guard Cancel Dodge, Attack Cancel Dodge, Guard Cancel Attack, or "MAX" Mode may be performed by expending one of the four gauges that have been saved. When cancelling an attack into activating the "MAX" Mode or into a Super Special Move (or MAX Super Special Move if in MAX Mode).
